Back to projects

A portable living wall composed of hinged, frame-based panels filled with California native plants, sited at the entrance of a neighborhood café.

Aura wanted their sidewalk to feel like an invitation rather than a queue. The brief was simple to say and hard to do: soften the concrete, mark the threshold, and welcome people in before they even reach the door.

We answered with a six-panel folding screen — hinged, frame-based, and planted entirely with California natives chosen for scent and resilience. Alyssum and coastal sage carry the fragrance; spider plant and lobelia hold the structure through fog and afternoon sun. No hardware, no anchoring — each panel lifts off the frame for any maintenance.

Because the piece folds, staff reconfigure it through the day: wide open to shelter the morning line, angled tighter in the afternoon to carve a small green room for two. One morning, a dragonfly stopped on a leaf and stayed a while — the kind of small visitor that told us the piece was doing more than decorating a sidewalk.
